The Express, whose origin as a team dates back to the late nineties in the OBHA, have patiently and persistently worked their way back to the top ‘A’ level of the ball hockey podium in Ontario. The Express have been the quintessential model for a progressive and developmental approach to constructing a competitive and successful team that has finally reaped its reward by bringing in a retooling on the back end with Danny Conte, Freddie Pereira, Joey Parks and Spencer Irving all joining the veterans James Mentis and Matt Rudnicki.
In a thrilling championship final, the Express defeated the Vaughan Jets for the Premier Championship, and earned a seed at the 2009 Canadian Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Leading the way for the Express was netminder and playoff MVP, David Di Gironimo who had yet to win the ‘A’ Provincial Championship. Di Gironimo put on a dazzling goaltending performance to weather an overpowering Jets offense during the entire first period, managing to hold off their vaunted offense.
The Express would eventually rally around their goaltender led by Tony Monteiro who would score two goals. The Express seemed to raise their energy after some absolutely fantastic saves by the acrobatic goaltender on their way to the 3-0 victory. The team who was built from the net out gave up only one goal in the championship final.
Congratulations to head coach, Manny Correia, and members of the Express, Danny Conte, David Di Gioronimo, Spencer Irving, Nelson Lajeunesse, Craig Mc Currie, James Mentis, Robert Mentis, Tony Monteiro, Chris Morrison Jr., Pauly Neves, Joey Parks, Freddie Pereira, Mike Porter, Terry Roache, Derek Rodrigues, Matt Rudnicki, Claudio Scaduto, Jim Tabas, Tony Talevski, Matthew Tremblett, and Blair Tsuji.
Both teams will be departing soon as they have qualified along with the Mississauga Hawks for the National Championships, August 4-9 in Vancouver, British Columbia. For all your daily results and live web casting follow the Ontario teams on www.cbha.com. We wish all the teams the best of luck.
