2016 Simcoe County Boys AA Highschool Ball Hockey Tournament

Well there is no secret about high school ball hockey in the neighboring communities of Midland and Penetanguishene and it’s surrounding area.  It’s growing and its here to stay.  The Ontario Ball Hockey Association’s hosted the inaugural Simcoe County High School Ball Hockey Tournament for eighteen boys and girls teams and they competed hard as the OBHA Crowned Highschool Champions!

Although the event was inaugural tournament for Simcoe County, the OBHA has been hosting the Highschool Championships for over fifteen years so the teams were aware of what it was to take to win.

The Simcoe County tournament had the addition of some exciting new teams which can now celebrate all the champions for a year that has seen an increased level of participation in the tournament and there are new champs in both boys and girls Ontario Highschool Ball Hockey.

The presentation of the championship trophy, and wearables has become synonymous with OBHA supremacy.  It is an accomplishment and one of the most sought after collection of trinkets in sports today.  The experience and bragging rights is the goal of most teams at the highschool level of play in the province.

After the hard fought preliminary round games the tournament was open for any team to win the championship.

Boys A Championship - Penetanguishene versus Barrie North

From the opening faceoff, the Penetang boys seemed to out hustle the boys from Barrie North. Their pursuit for every lose ball seemed to frustrate the team from Barrie North and simply forced their will on the team from Barrie.  Penetang won the game 5-0.

Boys AA Championship – Le Caron versus St.Theresa`s

It is always great to see players give back and Junior Team Canada alumni from 2002, Jeff Gignac led the Le Caron team and his assistant coach, Benoit Chin will be on this year’s U20 squad heading to Prague in less than a month.

Le Caron saved their best for the final. The game saw stellar goaltending, end-to

-end flashes of brillance and was tied with under 6 minutes to play when Le Caron scored the go ahead goal and would later add an insurance goal and at the final buzzer Le Caron stunned St Theresa`s with a 4-2 victory.

Congratulations to all of the tournament administrators, officials, the teams and their coaches and players along with the fans and parents that joined us in attendance the event once again made the inaugural Simcoe County Highschool Tournament event a huge success.
